The decision about a career is one of the most important that any young person will make. Although there is much information available about the fast-changing world of work, there is no easy way to explore one’s options in the real world.

A high school Career Club encourages students in grades 9–12 to learn about potential careers and explore fields that interest them. Members are introduced to budgets and create one based upon future lifestyle choices and the average income of their researched careers.

Members review and discuss skills for success, transferable skills, and skills that enable high school students to embrace and succeed in their high school program. Finally, members engage in career activities including building a resume, finding and applying for jobs and internship opportunities, and developing interview strategies and techniques.

The club enables students to transition from high school with more direction in mind, making them more likely to embrace and succeed in a
post-secondary program that prepares them for pursuing their career interests
In 1991, school secretary Linda Lucas took over as advisor to the Cheerleading squads and under her direction the program became more rigorous and demanding. One of the changes she brought was to start Cheerleading practices in the first week of June rather than the usual start in July.

The JV Squad went to camp in July to learn new techniques and returned from camp with a more updated style with sharper arm motions, clearer chants, and more complex pyramid formations.

If I'm not mistaken, I think Linda had been a Cheerleader when she attended Brunswick High School.

To help pay for the cost of camp, the squad members held cake raffles and car washes.

Along with the Varsity Squad which held a game booth at the Jefferson Carnival over a thousand dollars were raised during the summer to defray the cost of Cheerleading camp.
Brunswick honors its own 'Rosie the Riveter'
By Jillian Atelsek for The Frederick News-Post, September 3, 2021
Bells rang out through Brunswick Friday afternoon, and 97-year-old Ruth Kline Staples grinned.
A small crowd had gathered at the city’s American Legion to honor Staples and two other women who took up critical jobs on the home front during World War II. Staples, along with Gloria McCormick and Lenora Brill of West Virginia, were honored as real-life Rosie the Riveters.
“We love you, and we will always remember you,” said Brunswick’s former mayor, Karin Tome, who officiated Friday’s ceremony. “You’re a big part of our lives.”
The iconic image of a bandana-wearing woman with her sleeve rolled up came to represent the thousands of women who kept the country going during the war. Prior to World War II, few women worked outside the home. But by 1945, they’d been proven essential to the workforce and the war effort.
Friday’s event, organized by the nonprofit Thanks Plain and Simple, aimed to recognize the workers who not only manufactured the weapons and supplies that won the war but who helped change the country’s attitude toward working women. It coincided with five others where “Rosies” were honored. One ceremony was as far away as the Dutch city of Nijmegen.
Brunswick’s current mayor, Nathan Brown, and representatives from the state veterans affairs departments and the offices of U.S. Sen. Chris Van Hollen and Rep. David Trone presented citations to Staples, McCormick and Brill.
Then, for about 30 seconds, everyone rang bells, the chimes echoing through the nearby downtown.
Staples worked on railroads during the war after her husband and brothers were deployed. She was born and lived most of her life in Brunswick, and her face and story have become familiar throughout the city.
“Ruth has been a love of ours in Brunswick,” Tome said. “She is a doll.”
Tome was Brunswick’s second woman mayor. The first one was recalled, she added with a laugh.
“They led the way for women,” Tome said, gesturing toward the three Rosies. “For women in the workforce and for women stepping out of traditional roles.”
The other two Rosies in attendance — McCormick and Brill — were West Virginia residents who worked in factories during the war.
All three women are 97 years old. While Staples and McCormick had both been honored at previous bell-ringing ceremonies, Brill had never attended one.
“I’ve been so honored today, I’m just beside myself,” Brill said. “It’s all I can do to keep the tears back.”
Surreal and satisfying: Brunswick High alum Luke Campbell details his Tokyo Olympics experience
By Joshua R. Smith from The Frederick News-Post, August 21, 2021

Shortly after running the fastest 400-meter hurdles race of his life — and doing so on his sport’s grandest stage — Brunswick High School alum Luke Campbell’s head was almost spinning as that day’s trip around the track at Tokyo’s National Stadium kept replaying in his mind.
It took him awhile to fully grasp the personal-best time (48.62 seconds) he’d recorded during his semifinal heat at the Summer Olympics on Aug. 1. Ever the conscientious competitor and driven athlete, he was also in his head about the minor mistakes he’d made that might’ve prevented him from running even faster and advancing to the final.
He missed the top eight by three places and less than a second.
But when he returned that night to the Olympic Village, he was met by “a thousand messages from friends and family” congratulating him on his big moment.
Despite not reaching the final, not earning a coveted medal, the whole experience exceeded the expectations of a runner who’d hesitantly gotten his start as a hurdler some 11 years earlier at Brunswick High and never seriously contemplated making an Olympic team until his wildly successful track career at little Division III Salisbury University concluded.
Campbell, 26, was able to seize the moment with a world-class effort despite his 2020 being a wash due to pandemic-related track cancellations and — more pertinent to him — injury recovery that lingered into the start of the 2021 season, threatening his chances of qualifying for Tokyo.
His performance in the semifinals also played a key role in landing Campbell on the 4x400-meter relay team for Germany — the country he represents because his late mother, Anne, was born there. Later that week, he became the first Frederick County athlete to compete in more than one event in the same Olympics when he took the baton to run the second leg of the relay.
Back in Frankfurt, where he lives, trains and works, Campbell called his Olympics “surreal.”
He detailed it all in an email exchange with the News-Post. What follows is the Q&A, with our questions in bold:
Overall, how would you describe your experience?
It was such a surreal experience. It surpassed my expectation of what I thought being at the Olympics would feel like, given the changes made in regards to the coronavirus. It was still great overall and something that’ll always be strongly remembered and often looked back upon positively.
Given the level of competition, did you expect a personal best in the semifinals?
Almost running a personal best in the first round gave me a bit of confidence going into the semifinals. It wasn’t the cleanest race from me, and had a few noticeable errors from me, so I knew that I was able to run much faster when the next came. I think the level of competitiveness also played a role. The times this season have never been so fast and consistent in history; we all knew going into the semifinals that a personal best and something more would have to be necessary in order to make the finals.
How pleased were you with the time you turned in, considering it was such a drastic reduction in your best time?
I was very satisfied. There was a lot of time lost in the beginning of the season, and to be able to improve myself so drastically, shows to me that I have still have room for improvement. It was of course upsetting that I didn’t make the finals, but I’ve exceeded a lot of expectations and accomplished a lot of goals this year, which are going to only motivate and help me at championships to come.
I noticed you clipped a hurdle midway through the semis. How did that affect you in the race, if at all?
It’s hard to say how much time or speed is lost with hitting a hurdle, because it’s different every time, but it was something that I didn’t perceive in the race, and think that it had a minimal effect on the race.
After it was over and you were back at the Olympic village that night, what went through your mind?
I was in a good mood traveling from the stadium to the village. I didn’t truly have time to process the race and the whole experience in and of itself, but I remember I kept playing the race over again in my head, to feel how it felt again ... and to think about what I could have done better, and just everything that led up to it in that day.
When were you able to connect with your family after you competed in the semifinals? What was their reaction when you got to communicate with them?
I connected with them later when I was able to get back onto the WiFi in the Olympic village. There were a thousand messages from friends and family, congratulating and supporting me from thousands of miles away. They were all extremely excited for me.
You are the first athlete from Frederick County to compete in two events in one Olympics. Did you know that? And what does that mean to you?
I recently found out about being the first person to compete in two events, and it’s a cool honor to have, and especially humbling. There has been a lot of great, and successful athletes that come out of Frederick County, and I hope that there will continue to be great athletes, and athletes who may one day see the path that I made and to take it even further.
The track seemed amazingly fast in Tokyo’s National Stadium. How were the conditions for you?
The conditions were overall great. The track is state-of-the-art, and the temperature was fairly high every day. I think this track belongs at the top of the list along with the other great Olympic tracks. It would have of course made the whole Olympic experience a hundred times better when there was an audience, but for me the Olympic spirit was at least there, whether I was on the track competing, or in the stadium watching other events taking place, or in the village seeing the community itself, and that made it all worth it.
Where were you for the men’s 400 hurdles final? What did you think of that amazing race [Norway’s Karsten Warholm smashed his own world record with a winning time of 45.94 seconds in the fastest 400 hurdles race ever]?
I was in the village when the race happened. It definitely is a historic moment for those who took part in that race, and almost mind-blowing to see the development in the sport and the barriers that continue to get broken. It is definitely one of those most competitive, and exciting sport disciplines in track and field and in general, and it’s easy to see why.
Tell me about how you came to run on the 4x400 team. Was that a possibility all along, or were you surprised by that opportunity? When was the last time you ran in the 4x4?
It was decided shortly after that I was going to run on the relay as well. The time that I ran in the semifinals helped prove that I was able to run a somewhat [fast] time in the [4x400] relay if I was to be placed on it. It was decided by the coaches of the relay team, in hopes to run the best possible time with the four strongest 400-meter runners available. I was happy and thankful that I was able to secure a spot. It was one of my favorite events that I did when I competed for Salisbury, the last time being in 2016.
How did this entire experience set you up for the future?
The experience was overwhelming in the sense that it’s something that can’t be topped for another three years. There’s a lot of time in between for people to fall off, and to lose sight of everything that was done in preparation for the Olympic Games in the first place, but it’s only given me motivation however to become the best I can be and to reach [the] next level.
What’s next for you this summer? Do you plan to come back to visit Frederick County anytime soon?
For the moment I’m back in Frankfurt in order to train for the next couple of weeks, before I go on a small race circuit before running my last race for the season at the ISTAF Stadionfest in Berlin.
I’ll probably be heading back to the U.S. shortly after to enjoy a much-needed break before the
Lifelong Railroader Dan McLane steps down as Brunswick boys hoops coach
By John Cannon from The Frederick News-Post, August 7, 2021

In Photo: Dan McLane, shown coaching Brunswick's boys basketball team in the 2013 Class 1A state semifinals against New Town at the University of Maryland's Comcast Center, stepped down after 17 years at the helm. "He did so many things that can't be measured in wins and losses for kids at Brunswick," said Jon Jarrett, Brunswick's athletic director.

Dan McLane’s connection to Brunswick High School boys basketball began long before he became the team’s varsity head coach in 2004.
When McLane was a first-grader, his older brother played for the Railroaders, and McLane himself played for Brunswick when it won the 1977 Class 1A (then Class C) state title. He then contributed to the program as a coach, starting at the eighth grade level in 1986-87 and later serving as a volunteer bench coach and JV coach.
“I grew up there, I played there,” McLane said. “Brunswick basketball’s been a part of my life since I was a first-grader, so it’s a hard thing to give up.”
Nonetheless, he felt it was time to do that very thing. McLane recently stepped down as Brunswick’s head coach, ending a 17-year tenure at the helm that saw him guide the Railroaders to a regional title in 2013 and forge countless relationships that will likely last for years to come.
“I’ve been wearing down for the last couple of years,” McLane said. “I got through 35 seasons, and I think it’s time maybe for the next chapter of my life, whatever that is. I don’t know what it is.”
McLane’s final season was short, thanks to the coronavirus pandemic, which robbed the Railroaders of some games in what was already an abbreviated 2021 season.
“We got two games in because we had a false positive. And this year, again, still we don’t know what’s going to happen,” McLane said. “And I felt that maybe it is time for a different voice.”
Brunswick athletic director Jon Jarrett said the school is still advertising for a new head coach.
“It’s definitely huge shoes to fill, and we’re definitely grateful for all the time he put into coaching the Brunswick basketball program,” said Jarrett, who called McLane by his nickname, “Duck.” “You’re talking probably 40 years or more that he’s been a part of the program.”
McLane figured he joined Brunswick’s high school program as a volunteer bench coach under head coach Jim Sklencar during the early 1990s.
McLane appreciated how Sklencar helped him land spots in the program even though McLane wasn’t a teacher. One such job opened up in the late 1990s, when McLane was working for AT&T.
“Jim said, ‘Hey, the [JV coaching job is] opening up, you think you could take it?’” McLane said. “I was able to finagle it, and here we are now.”
Under McLane, the Railroaders made their deepest playoff run in 2013, when they reached the Class 1A state semifinals, where they lost 52-44 to New Town at the University of Maryland’s Comcast Center.
“The group in 2013, that was great,” McLane said. “We were able to get back at Allegany, and we beat them by 25 [in the regional final]. They played so well together.”
The revenge McLane mentioned referred to how the Campers knocked off a talented Brunswick team 77-56 in the the 2009 Class 1A West regional championship game in front of a raucous crowd at Frederick Community College.
McLane thought that 2009 team was his best. The Railroaders went 19-6, including 10-0 in the Monocacy Valley Athletic League Antietam Division, and McLane still vividly remembers how they gutted out a 56-53 win over Poolesville in the regional semifinals.
“Our gym was packed and it went down to the wire,” he said. “I don’t know if I’ve ever been a part of a better high school basketball game than that.”
McLane told a lot of former players, via text message, that he was stepping down.
“I’m going to miss all the guys, the camaraderie of being part of the team,” McLane aid. “Especially at the varsity level, you build relationships that a lot of times, they’re lifelong. I’ve heard from so many guys over the last few days because [the news] really just came out.”
Aside from keeping in touch with players who move on, McLane appreciated those who remained with the program year after year.
“I look back at all the people who have helped run our program over all these years, I’ve had so many who have been loyal to me, whether they’re coaches or statisticians or whatever,” he said. “People who have done the clock and the book, all these things, I’m going to miss because you build relationships with them, too.”
McLane will also miss the competitive aspect of the job. Like most — if not all — coaches, he seemed to enjoy practices even more than games.
“The community and kids and everyone really enjoyed being around Duck,” Jarrett said. “He worked real hard. He did so many things that can’t be measured in wins and losses for kids at Brunswick.”
