Summary

A view of the Pontoon Bridge looking across the Potomac River from Virginia into what was then Berlin in 1862. In November of the same year, during the Civil War, the pontoons were removed and transported to Fredericksburg, VA for use in crossing the Rappahannock River.

Donna Lyn Phillips: They wouldn't have needed a pontoon bridge if Gen. Thomas L. Jackson, better known as, " Stonewall" Jackson, hadn't decided to burn down Berlins covered bridge that was only 3 years old, Harpers Ferry Bridge, and Point of Rocks bridge, all on the same day back on June 9, 1861!
