Summary
we were at the Brunswick Senior house for one of the mini bingos we sponsor for them. The last time we were there, we had met a lady named Clara and she told us how one of her brothers went to war and never returned from WWII.
She told us she had 3 other brothers who went to war, but fortunately they all returned home. One of our Legionaries, Dave House, heard of this and purchased this banner for her. Before the bingo, Dave presented the banner to her. It has one Gold Star for her brother who never returned home from war and 3 blue stars for her other brother who made it home.
The Gold Star service banner honors family members who lost a loved one in combat. Clara told me that her brother, Ray Boyers, served in the Army's infantry. He was with his platoon when a grenade was thrown. He unselfishly and courageously laid on it so that his brothers in arms wouldn't die. What a true American hero!
Clara just turned 90 years old last week and this is the first time anyone ever gave her a Gold Star banner honoring her brother's service. She was so happy we remembered her story and grateful for the banner (even though it's one you really never want to receive).
RIP Staff Sgt Ray Boyers. You may be gone, but you are not forgotten.
