Brunswick Art, Literature, Music and Theater

From Jon Evans. May 24, 2018:

I’m dedicating this week’s BHS Throw Back to 1980 graduate Carl Butler who passed away suddenly last weekend. As of yet I do not know the specifics about the cause of his death, but as one person described it – “Carl was helping neighbors in the Burkittsville community with an event. He joined them later for a celebration where he suddenly collapsed. Neighbors called 911 and rushed to his aid and began CPR but to no avail.”

I and many others can testify to his character which was one of kindness and caring, who was able to find the good in others. He was a gentle soul who loved art and expressed himself through his painting and sketches.

I present here ten sketches Carl did for the 1980 yearbook dealing with the various aspects of high school. Also included is a photo yearbook identifying him as “Senior Yearbook Artist" and his Senior yearbook photo.

The Frederick News Post wrote a story in 2016 about Carl titled “The latest addition to downtown Frederick public art: Mural of Hope” when he painted it on the side of a building commissioned by the Asbury United Methodist Church.

Carl brightened up everyone’s day who knew him as a student, a friend, a co-worker and of course as a family member. The world seems a little bit dimmer since he’s no longer walks among us.

Former BHS English teacher Pam Clark told me this sweet anecdote about Carl in her class room one day -

"He was a sweet kid. I remember one day in class he was doing seat work, really concentrating, and without looking up he said to me, "Mom, can you come here a minute?"

The class laughed, he blushed (I mean, come on. Black kid, white teacher) but I felt really special."

Rest in peace Carl!
