Summary

Then president of the downtown Brunswick branch of Farmers & Mechanics Bank, Claude Lutman posed in one of the old storefronts next to the former Kaplon's department store sometime in the mid-1970s. For those who don't recognize the spot, this location was across the street from the bank, which Mr. Lutman presided over for over a generation.

Although a resident of Burkittsville, Claude Lutman was a moving force in Brunswick, not only through his leadership at the bank, but in commercial real estate holdings on the northern side of the 1st block of West Potomac Street that he owned with his brother Arthur.

Arthur Lutman operated several businesses, including his paint store across from J.J. Newberry's in the 1960s, which was adorned with Brunswick historical artifacts and plants in the window.

In a precursor to our times, the Lutman brothers lost their mother to the Spanish Flu epidemic of 1918.
