Summary

This photo shows the members of the Computer Club. When I first started teaching at BHS there were a few computers running the MS-DOS operating system but these were not readily accessible to students nor to teachers in general.

The first computer that came to the school in large numbers was the Apple IIe that used a 5 1/4 inch floppy disk drive with a monochrome monitor.

Next came the Apple IIGS which had a color monitor, the new 3 1/2 inch hard case disk drive, and a mouse to point and click items on the GUI desktop.

Eventually all the Apple computers in the building were replaced by the Dell PCs running Windows 1.0.

These computers utilized a mouse point and click desktop eliminating the need to type in DOS commands. As the years passed PC computers were upgraded with newer versions of Windows.

As a teacher one of the most useful things I did with a computer was to use a spreadsheet to record grades. This allowed me to post every Monday students' grades at the time and I used the last four digits of their telephone number on the printout to identify a student.

Once I started posting grades every week that pretty much eliminated a student claiming that he/she did not know they were doing poorly in my class, and in parent-teacher conferences this put the kibosh on any student who told their parents "I had no idea my grade was so low." :=)!
