Summary

Gail Ann [nee Bingham] Metzgar, 83, of Brunswick, MD, died on August 11 at her home with her family. Born on December 24, 1935, she was the only child of Charles and Virginia [nee Roach] Bingham. She graduated from Brunswick High School in 1954 and from the Frederick Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in 1957. She was a registered nurse for 45 years and a well-respected surgical assistant in the operating room at Frederick Memorial Hospital.

She was a member of Grace Episcopal Church in Brunswick and served as its treasurer for many years. She loved to travel. She and her husband, Marvin, traveled to Europe on a couple of occasions including their 25th wedding anniversary. Italy was her favorite. They rode on the Orient Express. They also took many eastern and western Caribbean cruises as well as an Alaskan cruise.

She was a very gifted needlepointer. Her work was exquisite and admired by many. She designed and created one-of-a-kind needlepoint kneelers and other items for St. James School in Hagerstown, the Episcopal Diocese of Maryland in Baltimore, and others.

Gail's other passions included the opera and mystery novels. She and her husband attended the Metropolitan Opera in New York City at least once a year, and they always stayed at The Belvedere Hotel on West 48th Street. She and her husband also attended Malice Domestic conference in Bethesda, MD in May every year, and they also attended the Magna cum Murder, The Mid-America Crime Fiction Conference in Muncie, IN every October.

She is survived by her husband Marvin Earl Metzgar (married 58 years), and children Karl James Metzgar [Marcia Anders] of Union Bridge, Ann Marie Metzgar of Brunswick, and Douglas Marvin Metzgar of Cranford, NJ; grandchildren Neil Anders Metzgar [Shelby Lynn] Metzgar of Brunswick; Andrew James Metzgar of New York, NY; Jake Thomas Donahue of Brunswick; Mason Arthur Metzgar, Oliver Anthony Metzgar, and Sydney Mamie Metzgar of Cranford, NJ; her brother-in-law Carl Richard Metzgar (Nancy) of Winston-Salem, NC; and her three nieces, Jenny Metzgar Ward of Clemmons, NC; Johanna Metzgar Brown of Winston-Salem, NC; and Sarah Metzgar Steffner of Chattanooga, TN. She was predeceased by her brother-in-law Arthur Roy Metzgar.

Memorial donations may be made to the Hospice of Frederick County, 516 Trail Avenue, Frederick, MD 21701.

A memorial service to honor her life will be held at 11:30 am on Saturday, November 24 at Grace Episcopal Church, 114 East A Street, Brunswick, MD. Visitation with the family will be held at the church prior (10:30-11:30 am)
