Summary

James & Bessie Cummings. Mr. Cummings was mayor of Brunswick from 1954 until his death in 1966. He is known for having "brought Brunswick out of the mud" with his successful initiative to pave the town in the late '50s. That included the building of the Potomac River Bridge in 1955, no small feat.

With his elegant attire, pince nez glasses and larger than life personality, Mayor Cummings was a throwback to an earlier time. He involved himself in all of the city's affairs, but always dressed impeccably.

Prior to that, Jim Cummings was terminal trainmaster in Brunswick on the B&O Railroad. In the 1940s, the Cummings operated the Roma Inn (on the current site of the Potomac Street Grill Grill), named after his beloved daughter, Roma Cummings Hebb.
