Ian Manuel: Found an 2003 article online about the neighborhood.
There is a Sears house there,but not the Kaplon house. It was owned by J.G.F Smith .
The Kaplon house was built in 1933 after he saw one (probably the Stran-Steel house) at the Chicago worlds fair.
