Summary
This 1890-1905 era photo comes from the museum and episode 5 in the Brunswick History 101 video series on "Old Berlin". It is a photo of the bottom floor of the old Opera House on the main drag of Berlin.
The opera house itself was on the 2nd floor and the upper floor was used for meetings and housed a private social club called the Cracker Club.. On the bottom floor was the Savings Bank, which later came to a sad end.
This building was a precursor to the old Red Men's Hall on West Potomac Street where the museum is today.
According to James R. Castle, the opera house was so crowded one night that the floors buckled, causing the ediface to be condemned.
