Polly & Les Conner: Before the park service took over the land, Les lived comfortably for years in a bus on the Potomac River bottom below the railroad and was a master of odd jobs around town. He was the man to see for fishing bait. and other commodities

Polly was known to have been a schoolteacher before getting down on her luck. She and Les were happy together a long time, but were not known to have been married. They were part of the community and loved around Brunswick. From the Myer Kaplon photo collection at the Brunswick Community Library.

From Facebook: Gene Dagenhart: Rented boats salvaged during floods, $.50 per day, Les got alot of my allowance June 7, 2014

Phil Lowry: I remember that Polly was found dead along the towpath near their bus. It was assumed she must have had a heart attack. Les did not like people fishing on what he called his property but we caught some big catfish around the area. I would wade over to the other side of the bank were Les lived and fish. When the river was low in the summer I fished and could wade from the Brunswick side to Virginia side of the river. Didn't want to mess with Les on more than one occasion I heard him arguing and shooting his gun. We lived on Walnut Street which is the last street in Brunswick that ran along the railroad tracks. Loved the days of laying in the bed in the summer listening to the morning bird chatter and trains going by. I disliked when the CSX removed all the old tall river maples along Walnut. They provided a lot of shade to our house and back then people didn't have air conditioners. Although Les was handicapped and made it difficult for him to walk he walked from his camper to Brunswick for groceries and liquor and carried back home. June 7, 2014

Peter: We're pretty sure my grandfather Wenner owned the river bottom land on which Les lived. If he charged him rent, it was very little or was in exchange for work at his store. Les stoked our furnace when we lived on 1 N. Virginia Avenue. My mom always liked Les and referred to Polly as "Tugboat Annie". June 7, 2014
