Summary

East End Elementary School In the early 1890s, the B&O Railroad prospered and with it, the population of Brunswick grew exponentially. By 1892, the population had soared to over 3,000 and more classroom space was needed.

In response, the B&O donated two acres of land on which a 4-room school was erected, known as East End Elementary. In September 1897, these rooms were filled to capacity with 245 students. By 1901, 347 students were enrolled. In 1902, 4 more rooms were added to accommodate the growing Brunswick High School (Westall Bldg) until the larger high school was built on Sandy Hook Hill.

When the school was opened, there were no indoor bathrooms and a line of students could be seen carrying drinking water from the old Gum Spring back to the classrooms.

Reuben Moss: I believe before the high school was built on 4th Avenue, the added background half of the school in this image served the High School classes while the foreground half served as the Elementary, and when the High School was built at the top of the hill, this become completely elementary.

Tyler Sigler: Converted from a five apartment building owned by Mr. Baxter to a fully- renovated 9 apartment facility by Tommy Sigler in 1987. I have the article that was written in The Citizen about it.
