Summary
The Civil War Correspondents' monument under construction on the Frederick County side of South Mountain approaching Gathland in 1890. The toll house now sits on the left behind the rail fence.
Gathland State Park was once the mountain home of George Alfred Townsend, a Civil War journalist who wrote under the pen name "Gath". Perched on South Mountain above Burkittsville where the Battle of Crampton's Gap was fought just prior to Antietam, it is the site of a unique collection of buildings and structures that Townsend designed and constructed, some of which have been restored. This large, stone monument dedicated to war correspondents is an outstanding attraction at this 140-acre, day-use park. The Appalachian Trail traverses the park and passes the monument base.
