Acknowledgments

The staff of this book owes much to H. Austin Cooper. His suggestions led to the establishment of the Brunswick History Commission in 1976. His idea of recognizing "Distinguished Citizens" has resulted in about 150 such nominations since 1976. His desire that a history of Brunswick be published resulted in that project's endorsement by the Frederick County Bicentennial Committee the same year; this book is the result. He has been only a phone call away during these past two years and has given the staff the benefit of his three-quarters of a century research and recollections of Brunswick. Austin, we thank you. "Memory Lane" became the name of the special sessions the book staff held in the Lutheran Church School room on a monthly basis for several years "picking the brains" of some of Brunswick's elder citizens. Those attending included Dan and Thelma Arnold, Clara Bohrer, Kathryn Brown, Louise Cannon, Howard Crowl, Louise Mills Funk, Pauline Comer Gosnell, George Hardy, June S. Jones, Sherman Lowry, Thelma McMurry, Mary Jane Watson, and Pat Werking; the last-named always provided tea, coffee, and sweet rolls (at her expense). Since we kept no record of attendance, we are certain to have missed listing some who attended those sessions; for this we apologize. We thank all of you. We thank those who were "only a phone call away" more times than we can remember, among them H. Marion "Dutch" Burns, Sherman Lowry, Clara Bohrer, Pete Chaney, and Eleanor Milligan, curator of the Brunswick Museum, all of whom cooperated selfless} y for our many needs. Equally important were those we called less frequently, who are too numerous to try to list. We thank you all. A special acknowledgment goes to our indispensable source of information and researcher of official books, Ernestine Wenner Phillips; the entire staff at City Hall and Mayor Susan Fauntleroy were cooperative whenever we asked for help. Terri McLaughlin and Janice Marsh, of the Economic and Community Development offices made life easier by tolerating our interruptions and sharing their facilities without complaint. Thank you, ladies and gentlemen. The many town organizations and businesses that provided their histories are greatly appreciated, as well as certain individuals who saved us hours by writing their own histories. Thank you Pauline Bowlus for transcribing all of our oral history tapes. They received widespread use in writing the copy. Sunny Nestler, thank you for your great help with our computer, and for introducing us to "Popcorn;" it made this book possible. Paul Blough, you reproduced our first pictures, and then forgot to collect any payment. We need more like you. Thank you. Thomas Humm, thank you for hanging on to that 1915 map of Brunswick until you learned about our commission. We needed that map.
