Byron Kao, M.D., at his desk in his office on the bottom floor of the family home in Gum Springs Hollow above City Park. Dr. Kao took over the mantle of B&amp;O Railroad doctor upon Dr. J.G.F. Smith&#039;s retirement in the 1960s. Railroaders joked that Dr. Kao had a &quot;magic wand&quot; to treat numerous injuries in the Brunswick yard.<br /> <br /> Dr. Kao&#039;s office was essentially a mini-hospital, in which he had an operating area, an X-ray machine, and a centrifuge to perform bloodwork. He even had a small pharmacy where he dispensed medications in small envelopes. In many ways, he was ahead of his time.
