Charlie Utterback served in World War I and then became active in the Brunswick community as a teacher in the manual training and business departments at the high school for many years. During this time, he also served as an athletic coach. Mr. Utterback and the Rcv. Luther Martin organized Troop 2, Boy Scouts of America, the second troop in the state, the Boy’s Club of Brunswick, and a town youth program. Charlie owned land in Washington County which he made available to local Scout Troops, and ultimately willed to the Methodist Church. Camp Powama, later Manadokan, was developed there. It is now active yearround as a camp of the Baltimore Annual Conference serving Maryland, West Virginia, and the District of Columbia. In 1946, Mr. Utterback received the Silver Beaver Award from the Boy Scouts of America.

Mr. CHARLES L. UTTERBACK of Prospect Boulevard, Frederick, died Monday, July 9 at the Veteran's Administration Hospital in Martinsburg. He was the husband of Bertha Lee Catlett Utterback. Born in Brunswick, Nov. 27, 1897, he was a son of the late William W. and Emma Thomas Utterback. He was a retired farmer having lived in Washington County. He was a veteran of World War I.

Mr. Utterback taught manual training, physical education and business arithmetic at Brunswick high School many years ago. He donated land in Washington County to the Boy Scouts of America for Camp Manadokin, in which he was very active. He was presented the Silver Beaver Award and was scoutmaster for a number of years. Mr. Utterback was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Brunswick and was superintendent of Sunday Schools for 50 years.

Surviving in addition to his wife are: three sisters, Miss Ruth Utterback, Mrs. Esther Frye, both of Brunswick and Mrs. Gladys Stine of Fairfax, Va.; one brother, Oswald Utterback of Knoxville; and two nephews and three nieces.

Services were held at the United Methodist Church, Brunswick; interment was in the Reformed Cemetery, Knoxville; arrangements were by the Feete Funeral Home, Brunswick.
