Less than half of all the locomotives were ever painted in the Chessie scheme and all of the retained the reporting marks of their home railroad. These GP9 locomotives powered the pre-MARC commuter service trains. The torpedo-shaped tanks on top were said to have been air tanks for the brake system. Because of those features, the locomotives could be used in passenger/commuter service.&lt;br /&gt;
