West graduated from the University of Maryland Medical School in 1886. He was a member of the American Medical Association, the Maryland Medical Association and the Frederick County Medical Society. During the long time that he lived and practiced in Brunswick. Dr. West was involved in the business, civic, and political life of the community. For many years he was president of the Bank of Brunswick, and at one time served on the Town Council. He was a surgeon for the B&amp;O Emergency Hospital, located next to the old YMCA.
