Former BHS teacher Nellie Hoar Lloyd and Chevrolet-Oldsmobile dealer Russell Litten after the clearance sale at Kaplon's department store in 1967. Note the "naked mannequins" above Mrs. Lloyd on the upper left.

The Kaplon closure was symptomatic of the exodus of the B&O railroad from Brunswick and the changing of generations. Mr. Litten sold his dealership in 1970. This was the beginning of the end of an era.

(From the Myer Kaplon photo collection at the Brunswick Community Library; Frederick County Public Libraries)

Smoketown History (Brunswick, Md.) According to "Brunswick: 100 Years of Memories", Mrs. Nellie Hoar Lloyd was honored in 1966 when the BHS PTA planted an oak tree dedicated to her at the school entrance on Cummings Drive. She was active in the Inner Wheel, Brunswick Potomac Foundation and was awarded a lifetime membership by the United Methodist Women, of which she was once President.
