Summary

This photo is from the 1987-88 BHS Yearbook and shows the women who manned and operated the school's cafeteria. When I first started at Brunswick, the high school and middle school occupied the same building and so all lunches were prepared on-site by the cafeteria staff. One of the best meals served each school year was the one served right before Thanksgiving break because the cafeteria staff cooked whole turkeys and made these incredible fluffy rolls that I swear one could use as a pillow to sleep on. Unfortunately, two things changed that brought about the demise in the quality of food served at the high school. Each year the cafeteria exceeded its annual budget and the principal would transfer money from a general account to cover any shortages. A new superintendent for FCPS decided that under his administration this practice would stop and all school cafeterias in the county had to operate within their yearly budget AND hopefully be able to turn a profit. He even had the idea of using cafeterias as a catering service. Needless to say that never came to fruition. The second change came when the new middle school was built and since it had a more updated kitchen, all food prepared for both the high school and middle school were prepared at BMS. This meant that school lunches were shipped over from the BMS to the high school where they were kept warmed until served. Although a few items were still prepared at the high school, for the most part lunches were now "shipped" in. I imagine that if a FB poll was taken about how people remember the school cafeteria food they eat as students, many would not have particularly fond memories of it. But these cafeteria ladies were an amazing group because they were experts at multi-tasking and performed a service for students, even though some showed little appreciation for their efforts.
