EDWARD C. SHAFER, formerly editor and proprietor of the Brunswick Herald, twice mayor and one of the leading citizens of Brunswick, died Thursday evening after a long illness, 61 years old. He was a son of the late Martin T. Shafer, and resigned last summer as mayor because of failing health. He was born near Burkittsville and after a public school education entered Gettysburg College from which he was graduated in 1886 with the degree of Bachelor of Arts. Two years later he received the degree of Master of Arts. In 1891 he formed a partnership with E.C. Unger and they founded the Brunswick Herald. The partnership continued until 1894 when Mr. Shafer purchased the interest of Mr. Unger and became sole proprietor. After conducted the paper for a number of years he gave up newspaper work and engaged in the real estate and fire insurance business. For four years he was town clerk and in 1895 was one of the Democratic nominees for the House of Delegates. He took an active interest in civic affairs and was chief marshal of the first fire company organized in Brunswick. He was also president of the Volunteer Fire Company and was one of the advocates which led to the purchase of the new automobile engine. He was a member of Loyalty Lodge, Knights of Pythias, a member of the Reformed church and was chairman of the building committee under whose supervision the Reformed church was erected. He is survived by his wife, formerly Miss Eva E.S. Nicodemus, daughter of Peter Nicodemus.
