Summary
The cannons atop the Bolivar Heights summit. Harpers Ferry was referred to as "the prize of war" as it was the gateway to the Shenandoah Valley. The Federals used the town and its connection to the B&O Railroad as a supply base, launching repeated invasions from here into the heart of Virginia to fight off the Confederates.
Harpers Ferry changed hands 8 times during the Civil War from 1861-65. The Confederates targeted this area as an avenue of invasion into the Union, occupying Harpers Ferry during the 1862 Battle of Antietem, the 1863 Gettysburg campaign and the 1864 raid on Washington. The mountains played a key role for both sides.
