Summary

This photo shows the remains of the "colored school" in Petersville next to St. Mary's Catholic Church as it was being demolished in 1977.

Associated with the church, which was built between 1826-1828 by slaves and free black laborers from the nearby Merrywood and Needwood plantations with funds provided in the will of Maryland’s 2nd governor Thomas Sim Lee, was a school started by Father John Gaffney in 1873 for the children of slaves.

By 1874, approximately 100 children attended this school, which may have been the first officially organized school for black children in Maryland. The school was reported in the parish papers until 1912.
