Dayton Keenan entered the U.S. Armed Services on September 26, 1917 as a Corporal with Company L, 313th infantry. He participated in the Meuse-Argonne Offensive.
Corporal Keenan was the 2nd Brunswick soldier killed in action during World War I on September 29, 1918. Private Charles Streams of 364th Infantry Regiment ("Buffalo Soldiers").was the first casualty the day before. The armistice was signed about a month and a half later.
In Brunswick, Dayton Avenue was named in his honor and American Legion Post 96 was co-named for him and Corporal Harold William Steadman, who also died in action during World War I.
