Originally a hardware dealer with the firm of Wenner, Swank & George, Mr. George built his business hauling & selling coal from a railroad siding on B&O property located south of the westbound track on the west side of Virginia Avenue. Around 1907, Mr. George took over the business and moved up the hill to the corner of Delaware Avenue and W. Potomac Street. There's still a hardware store in business today on that location, operated by the Strawsburg family.

The Georges also ran the coal yard near the canning factory behind what was then known as Litten's Garage on W. Potomac Street as you enter town.
