HOWARD MARVIN JONES, FORMER BRUNSWICK MAGISTRATE DIES --- Howard Marvin Jones, who for many years dealt out justice in Brunswick as its trial magistrate and was one of the best-known business men in the town, died Wednesday night about 11 o'clock at his home in Petersville district after a long illness. He was 81.

He was a son of the late Rev. and Mrs. Louis R. Jones of Reisterstown, came to Brunswick in 1896 when the town was known as Berlin. He formed a partnership with Austin F. Robinson to conduct a general merchandising business under the name of Jones and Robinson. Years later this business was sold and Mr. Jones entered the real estate and insurance business, which he operated until illness forced him into inactivity. He was the best known realtor in the area.

Mr. Jones was a leader for many years in civic, political and religious activities in Brunswick. He was a staunch Democrat and one of the leading members of the party in Brunswick.

He was first appointed police magistrate in 1908 by Governor Austin L. Crothers and he served under five governors until ill health caused him to resign in 1950 while serving under appointment of Governor William preston Lane. He served more than 30 years and handled hundreds of cases.

"Judge" Jones dealt realistically with the conditions that confronted him in the numerous criminal cases which he was called upon to decide and occasionally would sentence a minor offender to attend Sunday school instead of requiring him to pay a fine or go to jail.

He was a religious man, teaching for years the Bible class at the Methodist church. He was a devout student of the Bible. Mr. Jones was also a fraternalist.

In 1897 he was married to Mable Clarke Pierce, of Berryville, Va., who predeceased him in July of this year.

He is survived by eight children: H. Douglas Jones, Detroit, Mich.; Mrs. Christine Shipley, Arlington, Va., Mrs. Virginia Clendenning, Martinsburg, W.Va.; Mrs. Evelyn French, Winchendon, Mass.; Mrs. Marion Bankert, Baltimore, Mrs. Marjorie Smith, Walkersville, Alfred R. Jones, Falls Church, Va. an Mrs. Doris Osburn, Frederick. Eleven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren survive with two sisters, Mrs. Marie Jo? and Mrs. Ethel Hammond, both of Winchester, Va.

Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church, New York Hill, Brunswick; interment in Park Heights Cemetery; arrangements were by the C.H. Feete and Bro. Funeral Home.
