During the snowstorm of 2015 there was a post on Facebook seeking help for residents with shoveling driveways and sidewalks. Wes and Kelly White volunteered. Sneaking to 9th Avenue in the dark, they shoveled the sidewalk of Mrs. Marian Smith.
A few months later, Marian discovered who had shoveled for her and invited them over, showing them all of the B&O and Brunswick memorabilia Marian’s late husband Lee had collected.
Mr. Smith loved Brunswick’s railroad heritage and enjoyed watching the trains, He volunteered for decades at the Brunswick Museum and even has a room in it named after him.
Among the collection was a B&O Railroad cart that had been sitting in the Smiths’ backyard for many years. Sometime later, Jim Castle noted in conversation with Wes that he would love to have a B&O cart for the Museum. Of course Wes remembered where one was!
After Marian Smith passed away last year, Wes reached out to her daughter, Kimberlee, on Facebook about donating the cart to the Museum. Kimberlee enthusiastically agreed. Working with a small team including Phillips Wisor and Norm Cornelius (who remembers the cart being at the train station), the cart wheels turned once again on Friday, Oct. 26. Restoration will begin soon to repair some of the rotted wood and apply a fresh coat of paint . Once the work is finished, the cart will be donated to the Museum for display near the historic train station— all thanks to the Smith family
