Summary

A view of the Pontoon Bridge looking across the Potomac River from Virginia into what was then Berlin in 1862. See the piles on the right of the covered bridge that was destroyed by the Confederate Army in 1861.

In November of the same year, during the Civil War, the pontoons were removed and transported to Fredericksburg, VA for use in crossing the Rappahannock River.
