Summary

The current Potomac River bridge under construction in the early 1950s next to the old 1890s bridge. The then new bridge was built as part of President Eisenhower's Interstate Highway program, but a strong assist was accorded to Maryland Governor Preston Lane, who was a proponent of highway infrastructure during his only term in office from 1947-51.

Sadly for Brunswick, Ike's program ultimately effected the demise of the railroad industry in our town as it became cheaper to transport freight via trucks rather than trains.
