Summary

Prom is a major social event of any high school and the BHS Prom was no exception. When I first started at Brunswick it was held in the school gymnasium and the transformation of the gym into a decorative venue for dancing was incredible. I'll never forget the first time I saw members of the community, many of them sitting in lawn chairs, form a corridor just off the traffic circle through which students entered into the school. Flashbulbs lit up the evening as if it were the grand opening of a Hollywood movie and the students dressed in their gowns and tuxedos were the stars everyone came to see. I remember some students arriving in limousines, some in horse drawn carriages, while others arrived on top of farm machinery. Decorating the gym was a major undertaking and although many students volunteered to help ultimately the burden fell upon the Prom Committee. For a while I use to post outside my room on the Social Studies bulletin board copies of menus from various restaurants in the general area so students could get an idea of what the prices of meals would be and plan accordingly. "Social" being the first name of the department, I often talked to students about appropriate tipping for a meal and other advice such as "if your date is paying for the meal don't order the most expensive item on the menu." Early on Mr. Lee Zumbach being the Junior Class advisor was in charge of the Prom, and later this job was passed on to Mrs. Beverly Shaffer. Even though it was no longer his responsibility Lee and his wife Anne could always be counted on to be at the Prom dressed in their formal attire.
