Summary

A vintage ad for The Savings Bank of Brunswick on the Square Corner. The old bank was on the location of City Hall.

"The institution was founded to promote economy and the practice of saving money among the poor and laboring classes of the community, and to assist the citizens in the accumulation of preperty that they may possess the means of support during sickness and old age," according to a statement of that period. The bank cashed millions of "payday checks" for B&O Railroad employees without service charges.

Despite it's altruistic mission and the impressive names among the bank's officers and board of directors, the bank failed spectacularly in 1915. The building was sold to the Bank of Brunswick in 1920.
