Summary

One of many noted BHS graduates who became teachers, Mary McMurry Margrabe was a 1939 graduate of the "high school on the hill". After receiving her A.B. from Hood College in the early 1940s, Mrs. Margrabe returned to her alma mater where she taught a variety of subjects until the early 1960s.

She later achieved a Masters in Library Science, was librarian at Linganore High School and was instrumental in the establishment of the first Brunswick Public Library in the old West End Elementary School building in 1962. At the time of this series in the 1965 Railroader yearbook, Mrs. Margrabe directed the staff in "digging" for information, designing layout and writing copy.

A lifelong member of Grace Episcopal Church, she taught Sunday School to at least 2 generations.

Among her many contributions to the Brunswick Communty, Mrs. Margrabe teamed with fellow BHS educator Elizabeth Frye to author "Brunswick: 100 Years of Memories" in 1990 on the centenniel anniversary of our home town, courtesy of The Brunswick History Commission of which she was a charter member. Margrabe, E. Donald Darr, Lee B Smith and Glenn Cooper were instrumental in forming the Brunswick Potomac Foundation. Following her retirement, she was active in many other Brunswick and Frederick County organizations.

Mary Margrabe was honored as a Distinguished Citizen of Brunswick in 1986.

Donna Mattson: One of my favorite teachers at BHS. Loved her French class.

Pamela Compher: Loved her as my teacher and a great neighbor, gave me many a ride to the old high school, beautiful lady inside and out.
