Wendell Mahlon Stewart, 95, of 3509 Petersville Road, Knoxville, MD passed away in Scottsdale, Arizona on June 20, 2016.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Mary Jane Barker Stewart; his daughter Shirley Ann Dunbar; a sister, Doris Brewington and a brother, Owen Dale Stewart. He is survived by two granddaughters, Wendy Cannon of Scottsdale, AZ and Rebecca Cannon-Vejar who resides in Guaymas, Mexico; and four great grandchildren. Mr. Stewart is also survived by a brother, Gerald Stewart of Hagerstown, MD, and a sister Janice Laverne Lilly and her husband Charles of Charlestown, WV.

Born January 24, 1921 in Brunswick, he was the son of the late LeRoy and Ada Belle Arnett Stewart.

Wendell was a 1940 graduate of Brunswick High School. He retired from the Department of the Army Ammunition Surveillance Program in 1981 as a civilian Supervisory Quality Assurance Specialist with duties in several locations in the US, Korea, France, Germany and Turkey.

During World War II, Wendell served over 2 1/2 years in the South Pacific and Japan. He received Battle Stars for amphibious assaults on Bougainville and Luzon, Philippines. His unit received a Presidential citation for bravery on Bougainville.

As a member of the First United Methodist Church, he served on numerous committees. He was a past Post Commander and an active member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10421, and a member of American Legion Post 96 where he served as an Honor Guard for many years. He was a member of the Brunswick Historical Commission, a member of Brunswick Lodge 191 A.F. & A. Masons, BPO Elks Lodge No. 684 and AARP and NARFE Chapter 409, Frederick, MD.

A funeral service will take place on Monday July 11, 2016 at 11:00 AM at New Hope United Methodist Church, 7 S. Maryland Ave. in Brunswick. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Pastor Katie Bishop will officiate. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the New Hope United Methodist Church or to VFW Post 10421 (321 Brunswick St., Brunswick, MD 21716).
