William L. Gross, founder of William L. Gross' General Store, was an active citizen and a staunch democrat. He ran once for for the first Town Council in 1890 but lost, never seeking public office again.

The envelope pictured is an official envelope for the U.S. House of Representatives. The letter, from Representative David J. Lewis, states that Lewis was able to secure 2 tickets for Gross to attend the swearing in of President Woodrow Wilson.
