There an elaborate Christmas display on the 2nd floor of the store where toys were sold. The business on the 1st block of E. Potomac Street was always known as The Lace Store. Local kids would participate in a Christmas pageant acting out the "Christmas Story". One child was obviously unhappy at the sight of Kris Kringle. In the picture at the lower left is Anita (NeeNee) Morris & Dolores Jackson. Who else can you recognize? During the Christmas season, local kids got to see Santa in various locations, including the town tree next to the bridge and in other locations around town, especially the churches. When Santa arrived, each child would receive an orange and a box of hard candies. Please feel free to share your memories of these Christmas pageants in churches and in other locations around town. Now residential, the 3 buildings on E. Potomac Street were occupied (from left) by businesses such as Mulkey’s Maytag Repair, Harrington’s Shoe Repair, a pool room. the building in the middle was where Dr. Strother had his office in the 1940s, Frank Wenner’s barber shop was in the building on the far right in the’60s. Her husband Garland Grams sold Buicks at the family service station on Petersville Road. Mrs. Grams' brother-in-law Bill "Gumps" Grams took over the station and auto service business following Garland's untimely death, circa 1960. Mrs. Grams passed away recently at age 91.
