The purpose of the gateway arch is to welcome visitors coming to Brunswick, including hikers and cyclists from the C&O Canal towpath, trainriders, campground users andboaters. The arch was designed as a replica of a bridge span from the 1893 iron truss bridge that crossed the Potomac River.
