Summary

This dramatic photo shows a frozen Potomac River on January 24, 1985.

Doris Kelley Barker My Dad told me he ice-skated on the river when he was probably 18; they were born in 1894. He also told me “Doris, you are never to leave the gut—canal—never, ever dare to go on that river because it has big holes where you don’t expect them. I listened and only skated on the canal. No one else went to the river either.

Dwight Payne I drove my Honda 4-wheeler out on the river when it had around 8 inches thick ice that year.

Tyler Neff ...and 2 months before was the great flood of '85. Nov. 5th as I remember.
