Summary

SCOB Park outside the Eagles Club in October 2022, just as it's looked for generations.

The acronym stands for Social Club of Brunswick. It was so named in the early 1960s when the Eagles lodge was built on the land across from Brunswick Elementary School. The story is complicated.

Peter Wenner The reason for the name Social Club of Brunswick or S.C.O.B. Is this. It was one of my dad Bill Wenner's first cases as an attorney in Brunswick and he was advised to stay away from it because it could ruin his career. The reason was because it would place a bar across the street from the then relatively new elementary school.

The deal dad worked out was that the Eagles Club would be built at the rear of the large lot known as The Social Club of Brunswick. The Club was built at the back of a large lot, a good bit of which is a parking lot as it is today. The Club's Bar and Dance Floor were in the back, the member's Bar was in the front of the building and could be used only by club members.

So from a bit of land purchased from Johnny Gaither, a back road to “the Club”was constructed and the remainder of the Eagle's land became a a recorded subdivision called The Social Club of Brunswick for the construction of family homes. Ironically the back road is seldom, if ever, used as most people enter and park in the lot across from BES.

Everything was, of course, approved by Frederick County Planning and Zoning. In the end, not only didn't it ruin my dad's law practice in Brunswick, it helped build it.
