PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH The Presbyterian Church in Brunswick was located at 404 "A" Street and was dedicated on December 17, 1893 in a ceremony conducted by the Masonic Lodge No. 191. One of its pastors was the Rev.Luther Martin, who came to Brunswick around 1907 and served until the church was disbanded in 1918. Rev. Martin continued to hold services at the YMCA. He wrote the poem "I Am Going Back to Brunswick." The Presbyterian Church building later saw use as a residence and was subsequently razed when the site was acquired by the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church in 1937 for its new church building. ·

NEW YORK HILL METHODIST CHURCH

W - BRH

The earliest congregation of the New York Hill Methodist Church met in the Brunswick City Park in 1893 with hymnals and pews loaned by the Reformed Church. It was then decided to locate in an area of Brunswick known as New York Hill. A tent was secured from Washington and erected on a lot at the corner of 9th Avenue and B Street, but severe weather dictated the need for a more permanent structure for the eighteen families who were members. After the B&O Railroad donated the comer lot at 9th and Park A venue to the congregation, a cornerstone was laid on November 7, 1894, and the front portion of church was built. The current sanctuary and pastor's office are part of the original building. An educational unit was built around 1917-18, providing Sunday School rooms, a large kitchen and social hall as they exist today. The church has had 33 ministers over its history, withRev.J. W. Seay staying the longest, about eight years. Consideration of a new parsonage resulted in a $48,000 structure at 30 Eighth Avenue being realized after the arrival of Rev. George Earl. $300 was spent for the same purpose in 1897. Late in 1989, New York Hill Methodist joined with First United Methodist to become the Brunswick United Methodist Cooperative Parish with each congregation continuing to meet in their respective buildings but sharing one pastor, Rev. George Earl.

MOUNT OLIVET BAPTIST CHURCH Mount Olivet Baptist Church is located at 32-34 West J Street and the present building is the second such structure of that denomination to be located on the site. The church was officially organized on August 13, 1905, under the leadership of Rev. D. B. Fisher of Middleburg, Virginia, assisted by trustees W. C. Monroe, Charles James, Henry Beard, Sr., William Brooks, David Johnson and deacon Albert Campbell. Early records of the church are not available as the services were held in private homes. Later services were held at what was known as the "Com Crib" on the nearby Charles Wenner farm. The first members of the church were baptized in the Potomac River; later a pool on the premises of Mrs. Sara Jane Scott, who lived on Center Street, was used until the first church was built around 1924. The original church structure was razed and the present building was completed in August 1975 on the same site. S - Sara C. Beard W-BRH
