Gen. Sup. Report Oct 1855

To the President & Directors of the Ches & Ohio Canal Gentlemen: Nothing has occurred upon this line of the canal claiming your attention since your last meeting. The canal has continued in navigable condition. Boats are passing freely and the trade gradually increasing. The usual petty annoyances are less frequent and I think that under a system which is becoming daily more perfect there will be but little cause to complain of them hereafter. Although the canal is navigable the heavy and frequent rains of the season have formed large deformities therein and a considerable amount of work will be required in them during the suppression of the navigation this winter. Nothing has been done at the pumping machinery since your last meeting. Since the death of my wife and indisposition on my family generally, I have not been able to make any usual reports from this time, but have not learned that there was any pressing necessity for it. I hope to be able to resume and continue thru for the residue of the season. The matters referred to me at your last meeting have all been attended to and I accompany this with a rough diagram of the situation of the lock and adjacent prospects at Berlin so that the board may be able to form a correct idea of the manner in which the rights of other· parties and the interests of the canal may be affected by the grant to Mr. Jordon of the privilege asked in his application to the board at their october meeting. The division superintendent with one or two unimportant exceptions for which there has been in case a satisfactory clause contained to report weekly. These reports are condensed and forwarded on to the clerk at Washing city. Marsh Run trunk continues to answer to purpose satisfactorily. I do not apprehend any difficulty at that point from that source. Our supply of water is still sufficient for the purpose of navigation. A. K. Stake Gen Supv. Ches & Ohio Canal
