Locally there was a north south road called the Carolina Road also know as the Highland trail. It crossed the Potomac at Noland's ferry. Joseph Hutchins map of 1864 places Noland's Village and ferry just down stream of the Monacy river. A map called The seat of the war places the ferry upstream. The · road from the ferry heads north to Fredrick through Beckley.

East west roads to the South of the Potomac came out of Fredrckburg through Leesburg, Waterford or Wheatland and then on to Hillsbrough, from there to Charlestown, Harpers Ferry and Winchester Charles Heyne map 1861.
