On a local level the Varney map of 1808 shows a road from Tramelsburg to Jefferson and another from Luckets ferry to Jefferson(Trap Town). With this map comes the root problem for those interpreting the history of Berlin. This map shows a straight road from Petersville to Berlin that did not exist on any

other map or survey. It could have be one of two problems. Either the mapmaker made a mistake and put the road in the wrong place. There was a road from Knoxville to Berlin. Or because this map was a Subscription map, (The people had to pay to get there name or plantation on the map). It might have be that Leonard Smith being the forward thinking business man that he was made the road to Berlin look like it was the shortest way. One thing is sure on the whole map the road to Berlin is the only straight. one. This might have been the mapmakers way of showing a road to be built some day.
