REF.01

To the President and Directors of the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal Co. Aug 10, 1869 Gentlemen, As the most profitable part of the year is at hand for milling and I am desirous of getting the use of the water at Weverton at an early day as possible.

I now propose that if you will at your

present meeting grant its immediate use,

I will pay an annual rent

of two hundred dollars and the expense of trunking the culvert under the canal.

Provided you consider the additional flow of

water will in any way damage or injure the work or I will give fifteen hundred dollars, one third cash, balance in six and twelve month, To buy the right out in fee, with the understanding and agreement that at any time hereafter should the stockholders desire to shut off or deprive the mill of the use of the water the fifteen hundred dollars must be returned to me before the water can be taken from the mill. Very Respectfully

w.
