Thanks to the research of Guy Fletcher and Anna Berry Selby, this photo was taken in front of the World War I monument outside of the old courthouse in Elkton, MD. The statue was moved in 1941 when a new courthouse was built. Judging from the suits on the adults, we believe the photo dates to the 1930s. 20:16, 21 February 2022 BHS Fire 3.jpeg (file) 482 KB On a January night in 1928, horrified Brunswick residents witnessed the high school on 4th Avenue engulfed in flames. After the fire and during the subsequent renovation, makeshift classes were held in the First Methodist Church and in the old Red Men’s Hall, which was then occupied by the Eagles. Manual training classes were held at Karn’s Lumber Yard. Shorthand and typing classes were held on the 3rd floor of the Orrison Building. When time came to change classes, students did so by walking... 1

19:27, 26 February 2022 BHS Fire Rebuilding Commences.jpg (file) 145 KB Frederick News article from March 1, 1928 on the plans to rebuild Brunswick High School using the existing walls, which were found by inspectors to have been in satisfactory condition. The school reopened in September, 1928 with the addition of an auditorium to the rear of the school, which also served as a gymnasium. Assistant coaches Gene Foltz and Butch Gaither flank head coach Herb Daugherty. The first head coach of football at Brunswick High, Coach Daugherty was starting his 3rd season. All were remembered as tough, but fair coaches. With the help of others, Herb Daugherty brought Football to BHS starting with the 1968-69 school year. 18:35, 14 May 2023 Battle of Crampton's Gap.jpg (file) 396 KB On September 14th, 1862, 12,800 U.S. soldiers under General William Franklin clashed with 2,100 Confederate soldiers under Brigadier General Howell Cobb at Crampton's Gap overlooking Burkittsville. By the end of the day, the union forces had captured the gap and 14 field hospitals had been established in Burkittsville for the over 1,100 wounded soldiers.
