Summary

In September 1978, the 614 Chessie “Steam Special” passed through Point of Rocks. The “Steam Special” was part of a highly successful excursion program for the railroad company in 1977-1978. This is a great passenger's eye view!

The Chessie System railroad, originally the B&O, celebrated the 150th birthday of American railroading by launching a massive excursion train, powered by a T-1 locomotive (Engine #2101). It was a massive public relations success, running for 2 years and thrilling thousands of spectators across the Mid-Atlantic and Midwest.

Sadly, the #2101 was severely damaged by a roundhouse fire in March 1979, rendering it out of commission.
