By the end of the day, the union forces had captured the gap and 14 field hospitals had been established in Burkittsville for the over 1,100 wounded soldiers. Before the move to Philadelphia, the Van Pelt family lived at 10 5th Avenue in Brunswick. The photo is believed to have been taken in the lower car yard sometime in the 1950s. See the small bridge that you crossed to get to the ferry before the larger river bridges where built. It was later the way to boat ramp and towpath and was still the only way to get there even into the 1970s. Frankie Foster remembers there were crossties on side for railings back then.
