A child prodigy Brunswick youth pitcher, he once threw a no-hitter in a Little League Game in 1961. Gary went on to pitch for 4 years in the old Washington Senators' system from 1967-70. According to Sean Staub, "Field ball was a game played on a soccer field with a soccer ball or basketball by two teams of 11 members each and combining many of the techniques of basketball and soccer."
