Judging from the attire of the people on the top of the monument, especially the ladies, the photo likely dates to the turn of the 20th Century or earlier. Built in 1827, the original tower was the first monument dedicated to George Washington to be completed. For those who have seen this rusted old apparatus, the Brunswick History Commission has attributed it to Harry Catlett, who in the 1930s and ‘40s farmed riverbottom land that we believe was originally one of C.F. Wenner's farms. According to Jackie Ebersole, Mr. Catlett was also janitor at the old East End elementary school on A Street in the 1940s. He had a room in the basement. 19:08, 25 February 2023 Charles Compher.jpg (file) 65 KB The gentleman on the left was Mr. Charles Compher, who at the time lived with his daughter Evelyn Compher Donovan on West B Street. The man on the right is unidentified. Mr. Compher had been a Lovettsville farmer and passed away in 1978 just shy of his 102nd birthday. The farm is now known as “Hiddencroft Vinyards”. The previous incarnations were located across from the YMCA, on the left side of the building that was the Potomac Shop & Hotel. They were instrumental to the success of Compher's Crossroads Inn on old Rt. 340 in Knoxville, which was managed by Josie's husband Buck Compher. The restaurant was a popular stop on the way to or from the Charlestown races. It was renowned for its delicious Italian food, especially the spaghetti. The 1957 Chevrolet fire engine was so named because Jimmy Dean and the Texas Wildcats appeared so often at the Brunswick Fire Hall in the 1950s, the Brunswick Volunteer Fire Dept was able to buy it. The business was located up the hill from the square corner on the north side next door to the Bank of Brunswick, now City Hall. This is the only monument in the world dedicated to the memory of war correspondents. This unusual piece of masonry was erected by George Alfred Townsend, who was a famous author and war correspondent himself.
