Hemp Jr. Meat & Grocery Store and MacKenzie's Ice Cream Parlor in the early 20th Century. The folks posing in front of Hemp's are from left, Charles Bowers, Abe Hemp, unknown. Outside MacKenzie's were Paul MacKenzie, future confectionary owner Betz Mills and his brother Howard. Note the dirt street. African Americans worked as deck hands on canal boats, but were banned from owning their own until after the Civil War. There were black boat captains during the 1870s. By the final years of the canal, however, only one African American canal boat family was still listed.
